PM Modi Arrives in Maldives to a Grand Welcome by President Mohamed Muizzu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and ceremonious welcome from Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu upon his arrival in Malé on Friday. This marks the second leg of PM Modi's two-nation tour, following his departure from New Delhi earlier in the week.
Greeting each other with a heartfelt hug, the two leaders set the tone for what is expected to be a significant visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties. Top Maldivian officials—including the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, and Minister of Homeland Security—were present at the airport to receive the Indian Prime Minister.
The capital city of Malé was decked out in celebration, with vibrant banners, Indian flags lining the streets, and large posters that read “Warm Greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” Some banners featured Modi’s image, and children were seen holding paintings and portraits of the Indian leader as the city geared up for his two-day state visit.
PM Modi is visiting at the invitation of President Muizzu and will attend the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. This is Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and the first visit by any foreign head of state during President Muizzu’s administration.
Members of the Indian diaspora in the Maldives expressed enthusiasm and pride over the Prime Minister’s visit. One community member told ANI, “We are proud to have such a strong leader. We admire his role in Operation Sindoor and the progress India is making under his leadership.”
During the visit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Muizzu to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation in areas such as development, trade, security, and regional stability.
The visit also commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives—a partnership marked by India’s consistent support through infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance, and emergency aid.
